Some people blame the labour shortage on the pandemic.
Wrong.
It’s been coming for decades, and we knew it.
Maybe it was convenient to stick our heads in the sand and pretend that the underlying demographics would somehow change. Maybe we dreamed that the generation retiring boomers would shrink while the smaller generations of youth entering working age would magically grow.
Then the pandemic came along and reminded us that kind of magic doesn’t exist.
People ask where all the people went.
They went where they were always going to go. Some went a little earlier, but the demographics didn’t change.
Now that the shortage has become so glaringly apparent that some restaurants and hotels can’t open at full capacity, what can we do?
Our solution is “Ditch the Script” and “Train to Retain”.
People have always been your most important differentiator.
It’s time to treat, trust, and empower your employees and show them how much you value them as people that care about the work they do.
As our friend, Jim Taylor at Benchmark Sixty says:
Retention is the new cool!
