1987, I interviewed for a job as a hotel security guard.
I’d never been in a five-star hotel.
I knew nothing about working in security.
The manager didn’t want to hire me, but the only other applicant didn’t accept the job offer.
It was the last job I ever applied for.
31 years later, I left the Radisson Hotel Group as Vice President of Corporate Safety and Security.
I had grown with the company.
Security was my job, but throughout my career hospitality was my business.
Sometimes working in hotels and restaurants is looked upon as something you do while you’re educating yourself to get a real career.
That’s fine if your dream job is to sit at a desk, send emails, go to endless meetings, try to stay focused on hours-long videoconference calls, and go on a little holiday once a year.
I never wanted to do that.
My career took me to over 60 countries.
I met royalty, celebrities, and sports stars.
I was invited to speak to influential leaders in the EU Commission, the UK Parliament, the US State Department, and UN headquarters in New York.
Most of all, my introduced me to a wonderfully diverse world of caring, compassionate people that once were colleagues and now are friends.
If you like pushing paper get a “real job”.
If you love people, travel, and the world around us, choose hospitality!
